Marvel is one of the few universes that has a plethora of AUs. But, in their essence, they are alternate universes rotating around one main reality. 616 is main canon and the large amount of people who will apply will be from that main line. Anyone they would interact with would be considered alternate universe to them. We can't label Bruce as OU because then things get sticky---he isn't the OU. Hence, he and any other Ultimates character will be slapped with an AU to their name.
If we allowed player created AUs to have their own slot, this would give the Marvel U---and any other fandom with built-in AUs---an unfair advantage. There could feasibly be three of most Marvel characters, but a fandom that has no canon AUs would be limited to just two. To keep things fair, we decided to lump the two AU classifications together. Yes, this is a little annoying because sometimes people will app a canon AU before you have the chance to unleash your super awesome AU idea onto the internet, but RP is, as ever, first come first serve.
